****ODI**** aims to inspire and inform policy and practice to reduce poverty by locking together high-quality applied research and practical policy advice.

ODI’s Development Progress team is looking for an experienced media officer who can develop our media profile: meeting with journalists, reading research reports, spotting top lines, crafting news releases and thinking about how and where to place stories for maximum impact.

You will work with our research experts and communications colleagues to develop and deliver proactive media engagement plans – and always be on the lookout for ways to get extra profile for ODI work in response to external events. You will lead institute-wide strategies to achieve our ambition to have our research profiled in high-profile national, international and regional media.

About you:

  • You will have extensive understanding of media landscape, especially at a UK and global level and preferably in the developing world.
  • Substantive experience in external communications, including as a journalist or in a busy press office. Good news judgement and ability to communicate this to others are a must.
  • Exceptional written communication skills, including drafting compelling press releases with strong top lines and skilled op ed writing.
  • Ability to take complex, technical content and turn it into simple, widely accessible messages.
  • Ability to formulate and deliver strategic media plans and dissemination strategies, for the release of key pieces of content.
  • Ability to deliver media messages and story ideas in different platforms, including multimedia (video, photography, documentaries) and social media.
  • Forward-thinking person, with excellent professional skills, full of ideas that you are itching to try out
