Italy: Internship for WFP's Legal Office

The World Food Programme is the world's largest humanitarian agency, fighting hunger worldwide. We are currently seeking to fill internship positions with the WFP Legal Office. The positions will be based at WFP Headquarters in Rome, Italy.The Internships will be for a minimum period of three months starting between September 2014 and December 2014, depending on the availability of the intern.

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, WFP’s Legal Office is divided among three branches, with expertise in: Administrative & Employment Law; Contractual & Constitutional Law; Maritime, Transport & Insurance Law. Work is carried out by a multi-cultural team of attorneys and staff with diverse educational and professional backgrounds. The Legal Office is providing an opportunity for eligible law students to undertake an internship to help address the diverse and challenging legal issues confronted by a large international organization with field operations across the globe.
Depending upon the needs of the Legal Office and the interests of the applicants, the interns will work closely with attorneys in one of the following branches:

• The Administrative & Employment Law Branch is responsible for administrative matters and matters arising in connection with WFP’s personnel. The Branch provides advice and interpretation of the Staff Rules and Regulations and the administration of staff matters such as conduct and discipline, harassment, abuse of power, sexual exploitation, conflicts of interest and disclosures as well as advising upon legal matters arising in connection with the WFP’s various contracts of employment. The Branch is also responsible for undertaking the defence of the Programme in actions brought before various UN tribunals.

• The Contractual & Constitutional Law Branch is responsible for the Programme’s legislative, regulatory, commercial and contractual activities. LEGC provides advice and assists the organization with the negotiation of (i) non-standard commercial contracts; (ii) agreements with governments, UN agencies, public international organisations, NGOs and other cooperating partners. The Branch also provides advice on constitutional matters, including the interpretation of internal normative sources, corporate privileges and immunities.

• The Maritime, Transport & Insurance Law Branch is responsible for matters arising in connection with the Programme’s maritime, aviation, transport, logistics, procurement and insurance activities. The Branch provides legal advice, drafting and interpretation of contracts relating to chartering, shipping, aviation, land transport, logistics, procurement and insurance services. LEGM defends WFP’s position in disputes over contracts and operations involving maritime, air and surface transport, logistics and procurement.
